When most people think of Botox®, they only consider treating wrinkles and fine lines. However, Botox is a very effective, FDA-approved treatment for treating medical conditions like migraines, TemporoMandibular Joint (TMJ) disorder, and hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating). For many patients, Botox can offer relief from pain and discomfort and help improve their quality of life.

Botox® is a brand name for a neuromodulator called Onabotulinumtoxin A, a purified form of the neurotoxin produced from bacteria called Clostridium botulinum. When used for medical procedures, Botox® is injected into muscles to temporarily block signals that cause conditions, such as migraine headaches, TMJ, or hyperhidrosis. Botox® helps relieve pain and discomfort by preventing repetitive muscular movements and signals to overactive nerves, resulting in a relaxed and pain-free version of yourself.
With extreme precision, Dr. Naz targets only the muscles that contribute to your condition, limiting the possibility for side effects. For added safety and surety, Dr. Naz uses ultrasound to guide her placement of injectables in delicate areas during treatments. This extra step ensures good placement for optimal results and patient safety.
Botox® is an effective treatment for patients with chronic migraines, defined as having fifteen or more headache days per month. Typically, Botox is more effective as the number of headaches increases.
To treat chronic migraine, Dr. Naz identifies specific muscles of the key areas of the head and neck (depending on the nature of the headache) and injects small amounts of Botox® into these muscles including:
Patients should have at least two treatment cycles before determining the treatment’s effectiveness. Typically, patients will experience a 30-50% reduction in headache days. On average, Botox® provides migraine relief for two and a half months and therefore a considerable improvement in patients’ quality of life.
If you are experiencing excessive sweating that is not necessarily related to heat or exercise, and prescription antiperspirants fail to work, you may be a good candidate for Botox®. For patients who sweat excessively from the armpits, Botox® is a safe, effective, FDA-approved treatment that can drastically improve their quality of life. Botox® may also be used as an “off-label” treatment to address sweating in:
Dr. Naz injects small amounts of Botox® directly into these areas that commonly sweat, essentially paralyzing the nerves, and reducing sweat. Botox® prevents sweating only in the treated areas.
Most patients experience significant relief from sweat production two weeks following the treatment. However, the effects of Botox® are temporary. Botox® injections are typically required every seven to sixteen months for the armpits. As results may not last as long in the hands or feet, patients may require treatment every six months.
The pain and discomfort of TMJ occurs when the temporomandibular joint becomes displaced or swollen. The resulting pain in some cases can become debilitating. Common causes for TMJ pain are teeth grinding or clenching (bruxism) and even forceful chewing of tough or crunchy foods. Other life stressors that cause tension in the facial or neck muscles may also increase TMJ discomfort.
Botox significantly helps with bruxism (clenching) or teeth grinding. While Botox® treatment does not treat the root causes of TMJ, it may temporarily relieve TMJ pain and discomfort to help you discover other treatment options to improve overall health and wellness.
The muscles around the TMJ are responsible for many activities, including opening/closing your mouth, swallowing, speaking, and include grinding or clenching your teeth.
Common TMJ symptoms include:
